Vingatha: Blockchain-Backed Traceability for Maharashtra’s Handloom Heritage
Executive Summary
In a first-of-its-kind initiative for India’s handloom sector, the Department of Textiles, Government of Maharashtra, partnered with EveryCRED to build Vingatha (विणगाथा), a blockchain-enabled textile traceability platform for the state’s heritage sarees.
Facing widespread circulation of machine-made counterfeits sold under the names of traditional handloom products, the department needed a way for buyers to distinguish genuine craftsmanship from imitation, and for weavers to be recognised for their work.
Vingatha gives every registered Paithani and Karvati Kathi saree a verifiable digital identity, linked to its weaver, its origin, and its production journey. A single QR scan confirms authenticity in seconds.
The platform was officially launched by Shri Sanjay Savkare, Hon’ble Minister of Textiles, Government of Maharashtra, on 15 July 2026 at Bharat Tex 2026, India’s largest global textile expo, held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
Problem Statement
The Maharashtra handloom ecosystem faced a set of structural challenges that traditional certification could not solve:
Counterfeit Products in Circulation
Machine-made and powerloom sarees were being sold in the market under the names of traditional Maharashtra handloom products, directly eroding artisan livelihoods and the brand value of heritage textiles.
No Reliable Way to Verify Authenticity
Buyers had no practical method to confirm whether a saree was genuinely handwoven, where it originated, or who made it. Authenticity depended entirely on the seller's word.
No Digital Identity for Artisans
Skilled weavers and weaving clusters had no verifiable digital presence tied to their output, so the craftsmanship behind each piece went unrecorded and unrecognised.
Limited Visibility for Authorities
Government bodies lacked a structured mechanism to monitor authentic textile circulation or to protect traditional handloom products at scale.
Fragmented Ecosystem Records
Weavers, clusters, manufacturers, retailers, and verification authorities operated without a shared, trusted record of product provenance.
Operational Results
Authenticity
Tamper-resistant records make it possible to distinguish genuine handloom sarees from machine-made imitations at the point of sale.
Speed
Verification that previously depended on trust or paperwork now takes a single scan on any standard smartphone.
Artisan Recognition
Weavers gain a verifiable digital identity attached to their work, connecting the buyer directly to the person who made the product.
Governance
The Department of Textiles gains structured visibility into authentic textile circulation, supporting heritage protection at a state level.
Scalability and Compliance
Vingatha is built on EveryCRED’s verifiable credential infrastructure, which is designed to extend beyond its initial scope. The same architecture applies to additional heritage textile categories without redesign, supports onboarding of new weaving clusters as the programme expands, and aligns with national regulations for electronic records and digital signatures under the Information Technology Act. Because verification data is anchored rather than stored in a single editable database, the integrity of a product record holds independently of any one system operator.
Strategic Impact & Results
Conclusion
Vingatha demonstrates how digital trust infrastructure can protect cultural heritage rather than replace it. By combining digital product identity, QR-based verification, and blockchain-backed traceability, the Department of Textiles, Government of Maharashtra, has created a mechanism where authenticity is provable, artisans are recognised, and buyers can purchase heritage textiles with confidence.
The model established for Paithani and Karvati Kathi sarees is designed to extend across Maharashtra’s wider handloom ecosystem, and offers a template for heritage textile protection nationally.
